Is It Good To Have Teeth Whitening?

Wake up every morning having a normal breakfast and normal drink when suddenly you just realize your teeth has become discolored and dull. At this moment a thought came to your mind, a teeth whitening treatment. But is it good to have teeth whitening? There are two choices of a teeth whitening treatment available as options; bleaching or whitener and you're wondering which one is better.

The term whitening refers to the use of products or undergoes a treatment that makes your teeth looks whiter and brighter. But before you use any whitening product or treatment, do consult your dentist to determine whether the treatment is suitable for you or not.

Before we discuss further on the question `is it good to have teeth whitening', first let's see what factors are causing discoloration of the teeth. The most common cause of teeth discoloration is tobacco, coffee, tea and aging. For some people, the discoloration might have been caused by taking too much fluoride or medications during their childhood. Unfortunately, whitening treatment works best on teeth discoloration caused by food consuming and aging.

However, teeth whitening treatment doesn't suit everybody. For most people this treatment seems the best there is but for some people, taking a teeth whitening treatment may cause teeth and gums irritation and may not be effective at all. People with sensitive teeth, having grayish teeth discoloration and having their teeth bonded or filled before are strictly not recommended to undergo teeth whitening treatment since it might not display the result you're wishing for. Consult your dentist to identify alternative options for whitening such as porcelain veneers or dental bonding.

Nowadays, there are many teeth whitening products available in the market. Most of the products use peroxide as the whitening agent and can be done by you at home or via dentist appointment. Whatever the methods and products are, you have to take into consideration the needs, the cost and your dentists' advice before proceed with the treatment.

One of the treatment methods is blue light teeth whitening treatment. This procedure is an in-office procedure since it has to be done in the dentists' office and have to be fully supervised by the dentist. A protective gel is applied to your gum area, next the bleaching agent will be then applied to the teeth. To activate the whitener, the teeth are then exposed to a high powered light beam or source. This procedure normally took about 1 hour to complete.

Another way of whitening your teeth is through "at home" teeth whitening kits. These whitener kits are available from your dentist or local pharmacy and are often affordable. Teeth whitening kits normally comes in two types; strips and tray. Whitening strips are thin plastic strips embedded with whitening agent in which you have to put on your upper and lower teeth. Meanwhile tray type teeth whitening use gel to be put on a tray before adhere it to your teeth. Make sure the directions of use and regulations are followed accordingly to avoid harm to your teeth and gum.

Albeit those two methods mentioned before, there is one more whitening treatment that is much cheaper and much more practical; the toothpaste. Unlike other teeth whitening treatment, toothpaste doesn't use whitening agent such as peroxide. Toothpaste removes the stains by polishing and chemically flushing the stains away. It is the cheapest whitening treatment but not the fastest there is in the market.

Like any other treatment, teeth whitening also have its side effects and safety measure. When administered according to the suggested directions, the risks can be avoided. But if misused, it can harm and wear away your tooth enamel. Sensitive teeth and gum irritation are the common side effects of a teeth whitening treatment but most of the time it is just mild and temporary. It will end by the time the treatment ends.
